They say marriage is serious and I've never doubted it. True, the getting engaged part was easy - almost effortless in fact *grin* - but in the wake of its romantic bling*, the burden of commitment is one serious contender...
When every conversation is a plan for the future and every $6-starbucks mocha becomes another cause to my financial downfall; when every lack of insurance policy is a possibly parent-less child later on and every decision can either monetarily make or break you, flippancy really does go out the window and along with it, sometimes fun.
It's been quite an experience so far, this whole business of getting married, and I do mean it literally. It's scary when every thing is about money and the risk of losing it unwisely whether through hastily put deposits or impulsively made purchases, the likes of which we are trying to avoid (or at least Vincent is trying to prevent).
Even when we fell in love with the most nicely renovated Pasir Ris maisonette and wanted to buy it on the second viewing, a sudden illegal proposition threw a spanner in the works and the deal was off - imagine a $445 000 purchase and spending the rest of our lives looking over our shoulders. It just was not meant to be, which was a pity.
After that brief but scandalous affair, we chanced upon an apartment in the heart of the city, very affordable and just the right size for two. But therein lies the quandary: do we buy an apartment that suits our needs right now or find one meant for the future? How is it that the middle ground feels like we're settling for less simply because it delays gratification?
The need to plan for the future is overwhelming sometimes even when you think you've found the right one, the right place. There's always going to be an occasion for self-doubt and second guessing. Maybe that's why two heads are better than one, at least when it comes to buying an apartment.
Still, with all this running back and forth of considerations and ideas, sooner or later the die must be cast. I wonder what it will take before both of us throw in the towel and become the hams in this relationship... Afterall, that's the key isn't it?
Regardless of whether the decision is a good or bad one - so long as neither chooses eggs and both parties commit to each other - you can always ride out a rough patch knowing that your friend will stand by you for better or for worse.

Post Op
Vincent's herniated (also known as slipped) disc has been operated on and he is now recovering well in Mount Alvernia.
That man is like an ox - nothing gets him down. The anesthesia couldn't even keep him asleep after the surgery and by the time he was wheeled back to the ward he was already flirting with the nurses. Tsk.
As for updates, wedding plans were put on hold for the past month due to the uncertainties surrounding this operation. Dates, venues and activities are still up in the air. The only thing that we've been actively doing is house hunting, and that my friends, is really an eye-opener. Nearly placed a deposit on a 3-room hdb flat in Jln Bahagia that is double-storeyed with a surrounding garden and shed and a parking lot serving only a few families. It was exactly how the ad described: Like Landed!
But first important lesson learnt for the week: Can't let the heart rule the head.
In the end, we decided to let this great house go cos' it just wouldn't have been practical in the long run. Sigh.
So the search continues...

The engagement story of "capping the love vein."
The quote above was said by Samuel, the ever-friendly and genuine guy from Je Taime who helped us with the sourcing of the engagement ring. His frequent mention of capping the love vein made me think he really believed in it.
Anyway, the ring was ready for collection yesterday and Vincent surprised me by going down to collect it on his own AND of his own volition after physiotheraphy at Raffles Hospital. According to him, "... there were lots of people in Orchard okay..." and he had to "battle waves of the public-holiday-eve crowd and after-office hour crowd" with his crutches in his handicapped state, which was sweet.
Back at his place, while I was munching on chocolate Easter eggs, he tricked me into seeing the ring (as I was adamant not to unless it was a serious proposal) and putting it on before finally asking, "So. Do you want to leave it on?" (Pause) "For the rest of your life?"
Simple. No bells and whistles. But with the right person, it was enough.
So I said, yes.

Two Less Lonely People In The World
I was down my dreams were wearing thin
When you're lost where do you begin
My heart always seemed to drift from day to day
Looking for the love that never came my way
Then you smiled and I reached out to you
I could tell you were lonely too
One look then it all began for you and me
The moment that we touched I knew that there would be
(chorus) two less lonely people in the world
And its gonna be fine
Out of all the people in the world
I just can't believe you're mine
In my life where everything was wrong
Something finally went right
Now theres two less lonely people
In the world tonight
Just to think what I might have missed
Looking back how did I exist
I dreamed, still I never thought I'd come this far
But miracles come true, I know cause here we are
(chorus)
Tonight I fell in love with you
And all the things I never knew
Seemed to come to me somehow
Baby, love is here and now there's
(repeat chorus)

Let's just state for the record, for the benefit of prudish English teachers out there, that it should really be "Two fewer lonely people in the world".
Unless the lyrics mean "two people in this world who are less lonely".
